Creation: Desolation: Restoration

Saturday 29 March 2025 is the date of our first tour of 2025. Creation: Desolation: Restoration.

Many visitors are unaware of how and why Undercliffe Cemetery was created, its purpose, or the key figures behind its inception.

This new tour aims to answer these questions and more.

Trustee John Jackson will provide insights into the cemetery’s periods of neglect and restoration. Having grown up just a stone’s throw from Undercliffe Cemetery, John has been deeply interested in its history since his time at Hanson School in the early 1970s.

“In the decade that followed, significant and unforeseen changes took place at the cemetery,” John explained. “I’ll be exploring its original vision and development up to the 1980s, alongside the devastation and destruction that later impacted the site. We have striking images that illustrate these changes and the monumental effort that has gone into restoring the cemetery to what it is today.”

Starting in the lodge at 10.30am and then out into the cemetery for a guided walk, this tour will run about 120 minutes in total.

Our cafe will be open at 10am for refreshments.

Tickets are just £7 [+booking fee] and are available from Eventbrite
